Docking the Robotic System: The robotic arms are attached to the ports, and I take my position at the surgical console nearby.
The Surgery: Using the console's controls, I operate the robotic instruments to perform the necessary dissection, resection, or repair — whether that's removing a tumor, repairing a hernia, or reconstructing part of the digestive tract. The entire surgical team remains at the bedside throughout, monitoring and assisting.
Closing Up: Once the procedure is complete, the instruments are removed, and the small incisions are closed with a few sutures or surgical glue — leaving minimal scarring.
Immediate Recovery: You'll be moved to a recovery area, where you're monitored closely as the anesthesia wears off, before being shifted to your hospital room.
Depending on the complexity of the procedure, surgery time can range from 1.5 to 5 hours, though this varies significantly based on the specific condition being treated.
Recovery After Robotic GI Surgery: What to Expect
One of the questions I get asked most is simply, "Doctor, when will I feel normal again?" Here's a realistic timeline based on what I see with most of my patients, though your own recovery will depend on your overall health and the specific procedure performed.
Day 0-1 (Day of Surgery)
You'll likely be encouraged to start sipping fluids and even take a short walk with assistance within a few hours of surgery — a concept known as "early mobilization," which significantly reduces complications like blood clots and speeds up recovery.

Most patients transition to a light diet, pain is managed with oral medication, and walking becomes more frequent. Many colorectal and gallbladder surgery patients are discharged during this window.
Day 3-5

Week 1-2
Light daily activities like walking, working from home, and normal movement around the house resume. Small incision sites continue healing, with minimal visible scarring.
Week 2-4
Most patients are back to regular work routines, especially for desk-based jobs. Strenuous activity, heavy lifting, and intense exercise are still restricted.
Week 4-6
Full return to normal activity, including exercise and more physically demanding work, is typically possible by this stage, pending your surgeon's clearance.
Compare this to open surgery, where hospital stays alone can stretch to 7-10 days, and full recovery can take 6-8 weeks or longer — the difference is significant, both physically and in terms of getting back to your life, family, and work sooner.
